Appearance: The shofar was made of horn, either ibex or ram's horn.  It had to be at least three hands long, and could not be altered from whatever shape it was off the animal except to ornament the outside of the bell with gold and to make the narrow end into a mouthpiece.  It could be given finger holes.
Use: The shofar was purely a ritualistic instrument, sounded on certain Jewish religious days.  The lips of the player were buzzed into the mouthpiece to sound the instrument.
