Appearance: Think of a very tiny fiddle with only three to five strings, typically three, and you will have the rebec.  It was usually carved from a single block of wood and was shaped somewhat like an elongated pear.  The fingerboard was either simply a raised part of the rest of the soundboard or was attached separately, and had frets.
Use: Rebecs were played with a bow, and was rested either on the shoulder, in the armpit, or across the chest while played.  It was typically played in monophonic (single-instrumental) dance music, and eventually led to the development of the fiddle.  It was seen as a commoner's instrument.
