Appearance: Think of a very tiny fiddle with only three to five strings, typically three, and you will have the rebec. It was usually carved from a single block of wood and was shaped somewhat like an elongated pear. The fingerboard was either simply a raised part of the rest of the soundboard or was attached separately, and had frets. | |||||
Use: Rebecs were played with a bow, and was rested either on the shoulder, in the armpit, or across the chest while played. It was typically played in monophonic (single-instrumental) dance music, and eventually led to the development of the fiddle. It was seen as a commoner's instrument. | |||||
