Hurdy-Gurdy

Other Names: Symphonia
Type: String
Origin: 12th century Europe
In Redwall: Used by an occasional hare
Appearance: The hurdy-gurdy consists of a soundbox containing several strings and an oiled wheel.  The wheel is cranked by a handle, which causes the gut strings to vibrate.  Button keys, the first keyboard ever used on a stringed instrument, are pressed to change the pitch.
Use: This instrument was used often in dance music, though rarely accompanied by other instruments.  Its sound was a continuous drone due to the vibration of the strings.
