Appearance: The dulcimer consists of a trapezoid-shaped soundbox strung with anywhere from six to twelve strings on one or two courses.  The soundbox was often decorated.
Use: Hammers were used to play the dulcimer, the player placing the instrument on his or her lap and striking the strings with the hammers.  Pitch varied with which side of the course(s) the strings were struck and which strings were struck.
