Dulcian

Other Names: Curtal, curtoll, curtail, dulzian, dulzian, dolzone, delzan, dulcan, dolcan
Type: Reed
Origin: 16th century; some evidence points to Italy
In Redwall: N/A
Appearance: The dulcian appears very similar to the bassoon, and the bass dulcian was indeed the forerunner to the bassoon.  It was a double-bore instrument, meaning that two parallel holes were drilled in the same piece of wood and connected at one end by a U-curve allowed an instrument to sound twice as low for its apparent length as one with a single bore.
Use: The dulcian was a soft, sweet-voiced instrument.  It had a range of around 2.5 octaves.  It was used in outdoor bands, in church, and in court.
