Appearance: The bladder pipe is a very unusual instrument. The bottom half looks like a recorder, with eight holes, but instead of a mouthpiece at the top it has a reed enclosed by the bladder of an animal, usually a sheep or pig. At the top of the bladder is the mouthpiece. This gives the pipe a unique sound because the reed is not touched by the player.

Use: The bladder pipe was apparently used in sacred music and in court in the early middle ages, but by the 1600's had gained a reputation as the instrument of beggars and peasants.
