Sloop

- Developed By: Dutch
- Purpose: Scouting, chasing enemy ships, carrying messages,
merchanting. The sloop was a favorite of pirates for its speed.
- Period: Late 17th century
- Rigging: Square rigged with a gaff sail; single mast
- Size: Up to 100 tons, but usually it weighs far less. Roughly
100 feet long.
- Crew: 8 to 12 men; can be as many as 30 depending on the sloop's
