Vauban Forts

Vauban forts were built with defense against bullets and cannon in mind.  The star-shaped fort was generally perceived as being one of the most effective defenses against artillery.  The design is credited to the French military engineer Sebastien Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban, better known as Le Maréchal de Vauban or Marshal Vauban.  Many Vauban forts were merely pre-existing forts that were redesigned to better defend against artillery attack, and so the interiors of Vauban forts could be anything from Roman-style forts to fortified villages.
