Spatha
- In Redwall: N/A
- Time Period: Ancient Rome
- Origin: Ancient Rome
- Description:
Cavalry sword of the Romans, between 36" - 40" in
length, made from iron; double-edged, diamond cross-sectioned blade. It had a plain
column-style grip, an oval guard, and a round pommel. The below spatha and hilt
are of very typical design.
- Use: The spatha was thought
to eventually have been almost as popular or more so than the gladius for
Roman soldiers. Historians believe that the famous sword Excalibur was
actually a late-style spatha, rather than the more romanticized broadsword or
long sword that it is often depicted as. It was mainly used for
slashing.
