Ballista

- Origin: Ancient Rome
- Time Period: Roman Empire up until the late 15th century
- Description: This was the medieval missile launcher. It
looked like a gigantic crossbow on wheels, and functioned the same way.
- Use: A large bolt was placed on the shaft, and the string was
winched back, then released. It was usually fairly small, and the bolt
was fired into the ranks of the enemy. They could be fired over the
heads of allies into the enemy's ranks. Larger forms were normally drawn
by mules.
